D70 lags when in Commander mode.

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have my D70 set on a flash bracket with a SB-800 on top of the bracket's

hotshoe. I have set up the camera to shoot as a Commander with the SB-800

shooting in Remote mode. The procedure I followed is here: <a

href="http://www.texasellis.com/d70/files/d70flash-

hirschr.pdf">http://www.texasellis.com/d70/files/d70flash-hirschr.pdf</a>. This

tutorial was easy to follow as I managed to get it working right. The one

problem that I have is that there is a lag between the time I press the shutter

to when the image is exposed. I realize that there are all sorts of pre-flashes

and calcualtions going om from start to end. But this is lag last about one

second. What I notice is that the AF Assist light goes on right before the

series of flashes. I have AF-Assist turned off in the menu system and am

wondering why this is coming into play by itself.

I think placing SB-800 far away from the camera would make more sense, than placing SB-800 on a bracket on the camera as a remote flash.

For placing SB-800 on the bracket, better get SC-29 cord and forget the commander/remote flash mode. This way you would avoid the commander to remote communication delay, and save usage of your camera batteries, as well as improve reliability and accuracy of the flash.

There will always be visible commanding and trigger flash signals from the camera built-in flash to SB-800 as a remote. You can get SU-800 that operates as commander only on infrared light spectrum, and does not cause that much of "closed eyes" effect from preflash blinking, when photographing people at close distance.

A bit late, but... make sure that the red-eye reduction feature is turned off (flash button, control dial to plain flash mode). The AF-assist lamp is not just AF-assist, it's what the camera uses for red-eye reduction.
