steven_palmer1
I've been using my Nikon coolscan IV with XP Pro with no problems but now I amusing a computer running XP Home and after installing Nikon Scan software itcant detect the scanner. I've checked all cables and am sure the problem isnot there. I do notice that when I plug the scanner USB cable into the computerI get one of those "this is not right" sounds from the computer but no statusbox appears on the screen so I dont know what it's trying to tell me. I'vetried all the USB ports and different cables and am sure they're all fine. Ifanyone has any ideas of where the problem might be or at least where to startlooking, it would be much appreciated. Thanks. Oh, the message I get when trying to open Nikon Scan is "Nikon Scan was unableto find any active devices". Steve
leicaglow
Two things I'd try: 1) Did you reinstall the software? 2) Go to Control Panel | Add Hardware and see if it detects the scanner.
mike_mcevers
Is your WIA service enabled?
steven_palmer1
Thanks for the suggestions. I have checked the USB ports and cables and they do work. I have re-installed the software (many) times and this does not help. I'm at a loss to understand what is going on. Any other ideas? Thanks again. robert_martin5
Steve, do you have the USB plugged directly into the computer USB or a hub? I remember reading something about problems unless it is plugged directly into the computer. My Nikon 9000 does not use USB, so I am not sure about this. mike_mcevers
theres a service called wia (windows image acquistion) that i believe is disabled by default on xp home. the twain driver for the scanner needs this service. is it enabled? michael_mcblane
Did you use the USB card that came from NIKON. I tried the USB cable inititally into my "stock" card and it wouldn't recognise the scanner so I added the Nikon card and it worked fine. I think this may be your problem. Stock-Photos
USB cable are prone to intermittnat failure. In other words, try the same device with a NEW cable. The old working cable on a different device will not rule it out.
steven_palmer1
USB cable is plugged directly into the computer, not via a hub. I have tried other cables that I know do work. I've had the scanner for a few years now (using with a different computer) but I dont remember any "USB card". Mike, I haven't checked "WIA". I will try to find that now. Thanks. steven_palmer1
Mike, I forgot to ask, where/how do I check the status of WIA? Steve
mike_mcevers
Steve, go to control panel then services (maybe adinistrative tools then services) then look for windows image acquisition. Im guessing as I dont have XP Home, but this should get you close. If its disabled the twain driver wont be able to load, if its already enabled, I dont know what else to try. hope it helps mike
steven_palmer1
Thanks, Mike. I checked it and found it set to "automatic" and the status "started", so I guess it's turned on which means that the problem must be somewhere else. I think I might have to re-install XP Home and see if that fixes it. If I re-install XP Home will I lose any files? Thanks again for your help. michael_mcblane
When I bought the 9000 scanner, the directions said that I'd have to install the "card" that came with the scanner. Just plugging the USB cable into the already installed ports may not work. Naturally I disregarded their advice and plugged the USB cable into the avaiable USC port. The computer did not recognize the scanner. I then opened up the computer and installed the card, in one of the available slots, closed the box, ran the software, and plugged the USB cable into the new port and guess what. It worked.
