albert knapp md
A firend just called me and told me he received a Leica camera from his father. The camera was purchased in Berlin in 1936 and has the S/N 182204. Can you tell me which model we are dealing with and whether Leica USA can do the appropriate CLA on this oldster? Thanks, Albert

jerry_lehrer
Dr. Knapp,-- If I recall correctly, Leica USA will now work only on M cameras. Your friend would be well served to send his Leica To DAG or to Sherry anyway. My first Leica, a IIIa, was also purchased in 1936, at the Berlin Olympics. tom5
I've had excellent service from John Maddox and Don Goldberg for cleaning and repair on screw mount Leicas. Leica doesn't work on screw mount Leicas any longer and I believe that Sherry Krauter mostly (or exclusively) works on M-mount Leicas.
Richard Williams
If Leica won't service it, there's a list of well known North American independent repairers here: http://www.lhsa.org/repair.html
jeff h.
This camera is a 1935 IIIa, Model G, according to Ghester Sartorius in his book "Identifying Leica Cameras." The IIIa(G) is a classic LTM (Leica thread mount) camera with built-in rangefinder and viewfinder, has shutter speeds from 1 sec. - 1/1000 (+Bulb or "Z")(the 1/1000 shutter speed was a first for Leitz with this model), and was made from 1935-1950. I'm not sure I'd send this to Leica USA; personally, I'd contact one of the independent people with this old model.

Rob F.
Beautiful work as always, Albert. Looks just like a pointillist painting, by the likes of Mary Cassat, or . . . who was the other one? Seurat? At one point Sherry said she wasn't accepting any LTM's for a while. Is she now taking them again?
gary_pinkerton1
You might try Kindermann Canada; they're an official repair station. I believe they still service LTMs. They do good work.
