chr15w
Comments please. I "ocasionally" have a need for a 70-200 for weddings and kids etc, I had a reasonable lens Sigma 70-200 f2.8 but could not get it chipped when I converted to digital so I sold it on Ebay. Im now toying with getting a replacement. I need a lens that is fast, quiet, quick to focus and above all sharp at max apeture. Can you give advice on either Canon 70-200 f4 versus Sigma 70-200 f2.8. I ask about these two as they are approx same price. Which one should I go for?
mark u
They are both fine lenses optically. However, I'd pick the Sigma because you will probably need f/2.8 for shots in church where flash is disallowed.
yakim_peled1
It's a FAQ. If you search you'll see hundreds of threads with the exact same question.

I vote for the Canon. I think that the future proof compatibility, the better build, the lower weight, the lower cost (about 100-150$ difference) and the higher re-sale value are more important than the added stop. Also, the "missing stop" can be retrieved by bumping up the ISO in most cases. Naturally, YMMV.

In the past, when I had to choose between the Sigma 70-200/2.8 HSM and the Canon 70-200/4 USM L, I bought the Canon. I gave the Sigma about one second thought and dismissed it, mainly due to the fear of having to face the incompatibility problem in the future.

P.S. Also consider the new Canon 70-300/4-5.6 IS. If you don't mind the poor build quality, it's optically excellent and IS can make some shots possible where they would not be possible without IS. Have a look at TDP, PZ and follow the links in this post.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
