peter_kim2
I saw a used Canon EF 28mm 2.8 at the local camera shop the other day. I needed a wide angles lens I was just wondering what people thought of it. It seemed in good condition but I noticed that when the AF was on the manual focus ring was really loose. Is this normal? It doesnt turn by itself but it has almost no tension. When I click it to manuial it seems to focus ok but the focus ring is a little looser than I am used to... Lens elements were clear and otherwise good, the price was $135. Is this a decent deal?
jaap
My 28mm 2.8 also has a very loose focus ring when in mf. A couple of days ago I bought the ef 35mm, wich is is of the same build as the 28mm and wich also has a loose focus ring, so I guess it's ok. steve_unsworth1
Peter, I have the same lens and it behaves just as you describe. The price seems ok.
PuppyDigs
It's loose in AF mode because it is not engaged and thus spins freely. When you activate MF mode it is mechanically engaged and thus becomes stiffer. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
taner
Loose is good when the switch is on AF - less risk of damaging the lens if you happen to turn the ring in that position (or maybe no risk - I would not advice you to do any such experiment with cheap Canon AF lenses...), unlike the 50/1.8 for example (I would not mess with the focus ring on that lens period - luckly the 50 is dirt cheap). glen peterson
Just looked at my 50 1.8, and my 28 2.8. When in MF the 50 turns really easily, the 28 is slightly more tense, but no problem. In AF the 50 locks. and the 28 spins freely. I don't think there is a problem. As long as it does what it's supposed to in AF and in MF.
