nang
I've lived in Boston for a while and I enjoy photographing the city, but one shot that I've always wanted has been of Boston's eastern skyline -- the large buildings of the financial district and Boston Harbor. However, I don't know where to go to get a good shot of this. I've seen images of the morning sun lighting up the eastern sides of these buildings and it is truly striking, I would love to see it with my own eyes and take some photos. Does anyone know where I can go to get a good photo of this that isn't a dodgy area? The docks in East Boston have some nice views but I wouldn't be comfortable being alone there at 5 or 6am. I think the same goes for Charlestown. I've heard that there is a ferry dock at Logan Airport that has good views of the skyline, but I don't know if photography is allowed there. Can anyone help? david_kusner
Well, the best choice I know is Piers Park in Maverick, but as you mention, being alone there with expensive equipment at 5 or 6 AM is a potentially risky venture. But it's where I would go. I was there for a sunset last weekend and it was pretty breathtaking, though a bit less than the greatest sunset ever. (http://www.pbase.com/dkusner/image/40990241/original) I've also taken a shot from farther up in Maverick just over where the Sumner/Callahan tunnels start to come up (around New and Sumner Streets), but that's the last place I would go alone at an off hour. There's no public place to park down there, but customers of the Hyatt will get all the shots they want and don't need to worry about getting mugged. Just below the Hyatt is a USPS facility that I pulled into one Sunday night to take some photos and no one bothered me at all for the short time I was there, but you're taking a risk there. The view from Deer Island is fairly unobstructed but you'd need a telephoto lens, probably not what you're looking for.
david_kusner
This photo will give you some idea of what you'd be dealing with from Deer Island. It obviously wasn't the right time to get a photo of the city, which at the time was just an afterthought. http://www.pbase.com/dkusner/image/36884722/original
charles_stobbs3
There was a fairly frequent ferry service from North Station to the Moakley Courthouse and the World Trade Center. I think it has been stopped at least temporarily. There is service from Rowe's wharf to Quincy and/or Hingham. They might have the angles you want.
