min_wong1
I sent my 20D to Canon factory in Califonia for viewfinder cleaning. A month just passed. The camera is now still in the factory and they told me they need to replace the focus screen and they are waiting for the part to be arrived from Japan. I am wondering why do Canon need to replace the focus screen? Does the dust demages the focus screen physically? I can't see any point that they hold my camera for such a long period and they are not sure when will the part be arrived and when will my camera to be shipped. They may want to keep it as long as possible till 30D comes out or my one year warranty expires.
bobatkins
I'm sure that's what they are doing. Maybe they damaged it trying to clean it. Maybe you damaged it trying to clean it. Maybe they're just teaching you a lesson that they really don't like going to the trouble and expense of doing repairs that aren't actually covered under warranty. I don't think cleaning a camera is part of the deal. Warranty covers repair or replacement of defective parts. If they hang onto it for a month or two, maybe you won't send it back for another cleaning.
jimstrutz
Min Wong, are you asking them to clean it as a warranty service? Maybe the only way they can justify this is to replace a "defective" viewscreen.
PuppyDigs
Other than blowing off loose particles, focusing screens are nearly impossible to clean without damaging or making them dirtier. If things get really bad, it's easier to replace it. If it's only a few specks you should learn to live with it. With time you'll only get moredust and crap on your focusing screen (unless you never change lenses). Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
min_wong1
I just asked them to clean the viewfinder under the warranty because I am selling it. I didn't use any tool that physically touch the screen and it should not need to be replaced. I know Canon is nice because they did it free for me, but just take a little bid long.
