Dedicated Film Scanner/MacIntosh (Follow-Up to First Scanner Thread Below)

Recommended Posts

Thanks to all who responded to the thread below, 'First Scanner'. I leaning to

buying a new Nikon Coolscan V in the near future. You can't argue with the

logic that a solution to fiddly film holders is to do away with film holders.

I know there's lots of Coolscan V users here so here's another key

consideration for my use. How's the Nikon Coolscan hardware/software work with

a MacIntosh system? I putting together a Mac system now and would really

appreciate a sanity check before making the commitment to the Nikon. If Nikon

and Mac don't get along well together is there a Mac-friendly alternate

suggestion?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Don Boyd

Don, I'm using the latest Mac OS (PowerPC) with my Nikon 9000 (firewire) and have no problems using Nikon Scan. I also use VueScan with no difficulties. I do not know about the Intel based machines, I would check with Nikon's website or call customer service to see if a universal version of the software is available. If I had to guess, I'd say there should be no problem. Paul

How old is the Mac system you are piecing together? Is it state-of-the-art, or being

pieced together from older components?

For the record, I use a G4 QuickSilver (733 MHz) with 1.12 GB RAM and a host of HDs

(run from Sonnet ATA controllers). I've got the Coolscan V and an aging Microtek Scanmaker

4 hooked up via SCSI, Vuescan drives both fine.
