Need a answer asap about DPI!

If i have a image scanned in at

w-722

h-480

resolution-72

 

and i then go into photoshop and change the resloution to 300 is it

the same as scanning it in at 300? Meaning would it be the same

quality?

No! You still have 772x480 pixels of information, whether or not you resample. If you scanned the same image at 300 dpi, you'd have 3008x2000 pixels to work with, assuming the source is good enough.

i told the guy i wanted some med. res scans. he said ok and scanned them for me. when i open the images in photoshop they say w -33.3

h - 50 resolution 72. Is that the same as a 8x10 at 300 dpi???

Just count the actual pixels for a start. 33x50 @ 72 is about 2400x3600 pixels. 8x10@300 is 2400x3000 (the formats don't match).

 

You can change the dpi setting all you want with "resample image" UNchecked, and you'll be changing the resulting printed file size, but without changing the content of the image file itself. If you resample the image, then you are changing its content, though some amount of stretching and cropping may all end up looking fine.

www.scantips.com is where you need to spend a few hours to understand all this DPI and resolution stuff. It IS really important that you have some basic understanding of what this is all about. It's sort of like those pesky f stops and shutter speeds. Without understanding the basic fundamentals, you'll forever be stumbling around lost.

The guy just scanned for your your photo that is just a medium sized image to display on a WEB PAGE. It is not quality printable beyond 3 by 5 inches. Extremely basic stuff.

High resolution scans (the kind you would need to make an 8x10 or larger from 35mm) can be expensive...
