Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye

With all the "complaining" posts I have seen of late I thought I'd

post something positive.

Recently, I have sold ALL my manual focus lenses (Canon, Nikon,

Pentax, Zenitar, and a few others) for several reasons: my eyesight

isn't what it used to be...and I grew tired (impatient, another old

age "issue") of having to re-set the aperture after focusing. Also,

I use my cameras in M mode most of the time and for those occasions

in which I needed to use the EX flashes in E-TTL mode it wouldn't

work, of course. So, I sold them all.

I immediately set to replace the Zenitar fisheye (very good lens)

with a used Canon fisheye I have found on Amazon, from a private

seller. The lens had only been used a few times and it's in like-

new condition however, I had a week to return it so, I took it on a

Sunday outing with my wife and kids to the new Getty Museum, here in

Los Angeles.

It was very sunny day, no clouds and very brigth. I am very pleased

with the results. I shot some RAW pictures and did straight

conversions in C1 PRO and all the pictures looked very good.

Contrary to many reviews I have read flare was extremely well

controlled. I have tried to get some happening and I couldn't: I

shot into the sun, a few degrees off, etc... You can see the

pictures. I think the lens behaved as well as anyone can reasonably

expect. Again, many reviews/opinions spole fo softness but, I can't

see any. In fact, i think the lens does well even in the corners.

It was also fun to just shoot ONLY with a fisheye (on a 10D). At

first I thought: what am I going to do with this thing is such a

huge space but, soon I was firing away...even as I had to move along

in the midst of the thousands of visitors (very busy day!).

Overall, I am super-pleased with my new lens! I now have to replace

the Micro Nikkor, the Nikkor 105, a Nikkor 500mm...so, it will take

a while and quite a bit of looking around for deals.

Thanks Giampiero, count me as someone interested in this lens. I'm finally about to purchase a real wideangle for my 20D, and was trying to decide between the 16-35L and the 15mm fisheye (I want both, the question is which one do I get in the immediate future). I enjoyed your gallery -- I agree with you about the performance of the lens. It seems more than acceptable for casual use.

Hi Giampiero, 1st I share you sentiments with the old eyes, The lens seems to have less curvature in the perspective than I imagined, are the pics corrected or is this the result of the x1.6 crop. I have a Sigma 15~30 but unlike your Canon it can be very prone to flare.

itsnice to see happy snappers.

The pix are NOT corrected (except for one, which is clearly noted as such and was and exp. in using PT-LENS).

The camera has a 1.6 crop so, part of the "illusion" is due to that however, depending on subject and camera position it is possible to get images that do NOT look "fisheyed".
