patflynn
Hey all, I just got a Canoscan FS4000 scanner on eBay and am trying to hook it up. So far, I keep failing because I don't have the right TWAIN driver. I have vaguely determined that the problem is I am running Windows XP; I notice the OS specs in the scanner's manual do not mention Windows XP, which led to my deduction. Am I right? Can anyone suggest a solution or workaround?? Or do I have to return the scanner? Please don't tell me I need to uninstall Windows and reinstall an earlier version! (...well, unless it's true). Thanks for the advice!Pat Flynn
curtis_dalpra
Wish I could be more helpful, but I'm not around my home computer right now. I have the same scanner, and it behaves just fine on my Win XP home OS. I just cant remember if I had to get a driver off the caon website, or whether XP recognized it when I bought the new computer...
roger_smith4
Try Vuescan, though the patched version of FilmGet is functional. The scanner works fine in XP for me. Is it connected via usb or scsi? Is it turned on before you turn on Windows? Does windows detect it when it's plugged in?
beauh44
Hi Patrick, Have you tried downloading the latest driver from Epson? Failing that, try Vuescan. Good luck!
User_1172872
If it is a SCSI device download the ASPI layer from adaptec.
rhaytana__tim_adams_
XP shouldn't be the problem. If you go here: http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=121&modelid=7460 and click 'Windows XP Compatability,' on the right side of the screen, you can read Canon's take on the matter. Good luck.

greg_campbell1
Mine goes great on XP. I've got a cheapo Tekram SCSI card and have had no issues at all. Didn't need the ASPI from Adaptec, just the Canon and Trantor drivers. Whether using USB or SCSI, try this: 1 - Cycle power to the scanner. 2 -Start > Controll Panel > System. Highlight either the USB or SCSI controller, whatever the scanner is hooked up to. 3 - Right click and 'scan for hardware changes' 4 - With any luck, the FS4000 will now show up under Imaging Devices. If so, you should be good to go (at least you'll know that the scanner and computer are talking to each other.) -Greg
kelly_flanigan1
The FS4000US has a switch on the bottom; to select SCSI or USB. If set wrong; you should get another drink.
patflynn
Thanks everyone for all this info, I am sorting through it now. I think I am going to use the driver downloaded from Canon's own website, despite the warning of potential instability that appears during setup. I really appreciate the steers. I am presently hooking up through USB but am going to purchase the SCSI connector tomorrow and use that exclusively. Perhaps the problem would never have occurred if I'd started with that step!?! ted_marcus1
My FS4000US came with a little supplementary flyer about "Using your CanoScan FS4000US with Windows® XP." It essentially tells you to log on as administrator before installing the software, and to insert the CD-ROM before the "Found New Hardware Wizard" with the "Install the software automatically (Recommended) option comes up. Nothing really special or unusual.
When I replaced my Windows 98SE box with a new XP machine, I installed FilmGet per the instructions. I loaded the TWAIN driver from Paint Shop Pro to make sure it worked. I never used FilmGet again, since I much prefer (and highly recommend) Vuescan.
It's definitely worth getting a SCSI card, since it makes scanning much faster than using USB 1.1. An inexpensive card like the Siig AP-10 that I use is entirely adequate for a scanner.
