TC16a with D70 anyone?

Has anyone tried using a TC16a teleconverter with a D70 body. I know

one would lose metering since TC16a does not seem to have the same

handshake as the real AF lenses, but the question is, is there

anything else. In the D70 manual TC16a is listed as incompatible

along with a bunch of other unusual optics like 8mm non-AI etc. Some

of these stick too far into the camera body. It is not clear in the

manual whether they don't recommend TC16a because you don't get real

AF and lose some functions, or because it won't fit mechanically and

will damage the camera. Does anybody have firsthand experience?

I can tell you is the TC-16A functions (semi-Auto Focus) with

the F5 and does not with the F100. It fits both without physical

damage to the bodies contacts. The TC-16A does not have an EE

Servo coupling so there is little or no chance of a functional

meter with the D70. My guess is really zero chance.<br>

The TC-16A is on the list of NO-NOs for the F100 but didnt

harm the camera. The F100 simply didnt drive it. The TC-16A

worked fine with a Nikon FE2 by just setting it to its infinity

position. I used a 300/4.5 ED-IF and TC-16A as my poormans

super telephoto until I could afford a real lens. If felt it was

better to pay pocket lint for the TC-16A rather than good money on

a so-so 400mm lens. <br>

Does anyone know of any electronic reason why a TC-16A

should not be use with a DSLR, D70, D2H, D2X, etc? The TC-16As

reputation is sharp in the center and soft at the edges, the edge

not use by a camera using the DX formats.<br>

I know the TC-16A is frowned on because of its semi-auto

focus but if it produced good image quality in the center with

some 200mm and longer lenses it could prove useful with a DSLR.

I would expect manual operation as with the F100.<br>

I use the D70 with TC16A, with my Tokina 300 f2.8 lens. Autofocus does not work (sad) and as said the manual lists the converter as incompatible, so, just to be on the safe side, I removed the contacts and the chip (unchipped!) from the converter and I use it as a dumb manual focus converter. I see no mechanical interference. I did a comparison with some other converters I presently own: Nikon TC14B, Kenko AF PRO 300 1,4x and 2X. I was really surprised to find out the TC16A gives the best results of the group, with my lens, so it is the only one presently used.

I am also planning to re-chip the converter, I have the complete bayonet and chip from a destroyed 35-80 f4.5-5.6, but have no idea how to put it on the converter as the holes for the screws on the bayonet do not match, and there is very little space for the chip inside the converter. I will try to figure how to do it!

This converter really delivers on a DX sensor.

<p>The TC-16a will work as an AF teleconverter (with limitations) on Nikon digital cameras (including a D300, mine works well with it), but the teleconverter must first be modified. The modification is rather simple, requires soldering and moving one of the pins on the teleconverter to a new location on the mount. AF will work, but the exposure compensation will not so you will have to manually set your exposures...<br>
