tim_b
Hello, The latch on the film door of my trusty EOS50 broke yesterday. The damage is to the part inside the camera body, which hooks the latch on the camera back, keeping the back shut. It is, I guess, possible to replace the broken part. However, since it is quite an old model, is it practical to get it repaired? More importantly, does Canon still offer repairs or should I just get a new camera? Has anyone had recent experiences with repairs to the EOS50? Thank you.
awindsor
Contact Canon but I guess that the price of repair by Canon, if offered, will vastly exceed the cost of replacement. Sometimes you can obtain the part directly from Canon and perform a cheap repair but I think you may be out of luck. God is telling you to upgrade ;) Would be more pleasant if He sent a polite note but He always seems to shout.
PuppyDigs
Some years ago I replaced a broken latch in an Elan. The part cost about $10 shipped through Canon USA's parts vender. It took me about 45 minutes to figure out how to do it and about 10 for the repair. Too bad they make those things outta plastic. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
iskandar_azaman___kuala_lu
Wow. What a coincidence. The same thing happened to me less than a week ago. I was thinking i'm still going to send it for repair. I still need to pick up my 420ex that i sent in to be repaired so i'll just bring the eos50 in to get a quote on the cost. terry_smith2
You could probably get a newer and more capable body secondhand for what the repains would cost you.
PuppyDigs
No way it's worth it to pay Canon Service for the repair. Fix it yourself. Replacing latches and battery doors are among the handfull of things almost anyone can figure out how to fix. Canon USA Parts 732-521-7230 Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. nilantha
Tim, I had the same problem few years ago, days before leaving for a trip abroad. I did not have any choice other than going to the local camera shop and getting it fixed ($60, I think). You can buy the part from www.uscamera.com and figure out how to fix it. They may even have repair manual on a CD. My EOS 50 is still going!
