drfl
I have recently looked at the firmware upgrade on the 20d - 2.0.3. I noticed one of the improvements is better communication with CF cards. What does that exactly mean? I currently have a 2 GB Hitachi Microdrive that occasionally corrupts some of the photographs on that card. It happens randomly, not all of the time, and in different spots on the card. I have resigned the fact that it was a card problem, however, this firmware note gives me hope that I can once again use this card. Has anyone had experience with this? Thanks in advance, Derrald. wes_baker1
I doubt the firmware is the source of your problem, but I could be wrong. I've used a 2GB Hitachi Micro for a long time in my 20D, and taken thousands of pictures on it with no problems. Having said that, I keep on top of the firmware updates, usually doing them the same day they come out.
eosdoc
Before going with solid state 4GB CF cards, I used a 2.2GB CF hard disk. The hard disk would become unreliable if the batteries were weak.
Once I figure that out, I would swop out any battery once the power indicator moved from "FULL". YMMV. obelix
I also keep on top of firmware updates, very important. I've never used a microdrive, but I'd say it's better using a compactflash card. Personally I prefer Sandisk. I know for a fact Canon test their cameras with Sandisk cards, fairly cheap on ebay as well.
eosdoc
I bought some 4GB Sandisk Ultra II compact flash cards when they first came out. The first two that I bought had a bad spots, which would cause the card to drop files, then become unreadable.
Once I got a couple of good cards, both the solid state and my hard disk has performed reliably, provided I give clean power with the EOS 20D and avoided the BG-E2 (even after the factory recall repair). YMMV.
I forgot to suggest to Derrald to perform a surface scan on the Microdrive. One way is to use a complete format. Another method is to use the freeware PC Inspector from Convar:
http://www.pcinspector.de/
