dogbert
Nothing comes close for the price. In the $450-$700 range are the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 EX DC, and the Canon 17-40 f4L. Sigma make a budget 18-50 f3.5-5.6 DC, but no one round here seems to have used it and I doubt it would be any better than the kit lens. Sigma also make a 18-125 f3.5-5.6(?) zoom which has a reputation for being good value, but soft beyond about 80 mm.
df-gallery
John, there are plenty of excellent threads regarding this subject. As well as topics which may be of interest to you. Trying to do a search on the Canon forum for things like, general purpose, good lens, zoom, all purpose. It should come up with a list. There are so many variables that you need to consider in choosing a 'best/good' lens. Short of it, there is not "best" lens. All things are compromises. So read up on all the various lenses and options, and then try it out for yourself. IMHO, 17-40/4, 24-70/2.8 and 18-85IS.
andrewmoore
a GOOD REPLACEMENT ?! Q.how much cash are you willing to spend ? A. Q.What "mm" (prime/zoom) are you looking for ? A. Q.What will be your subjects/s ? A. And then perhaps you can expect to see some answers that are best suited to your requirements. all the best. wolver
Tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4 Just as good as the Canon 17-40 f/4 and cheaper.
bob_a
A better question could be: are there any WIDER EFS-compatible lenses planned or already available? I want a Canon 10-22 EFS but it's way too expensive. Anything else I can wait for?

KenPapai
I 2nd David's reply and see if the yelling OP can narrow his question; otherwise the 24-70L is also a 'good' replacement lens.
marknagel
Ignore these guys, most have never touched a camera. Anyone who knows anything about canon lenses wil say the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS is the perfect replacement for the kit lens and a must in any camera bag :-) m
wakeforce
What are you talking about, there is no use to a 600mm f/4 when you can use a 1200mm f/5.6!
marknagel
The 1200mm doesn't have IS! m
les
Sigma just announced a new 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM lens with 3 aspherical and 3 SLD elements (http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3301&navigator=6), but I woildn't call it a "replacement". The closest in focal length (and 'good') would be Canon 17-40.

chrisjb
If you are only taking pics to print up to 10x8 and stick around f8 the 18 55 is fine. otherwise L to your budget. As Yakim says no need to shout good luck
john_bacon_shone
The Sigma 18-50/2.8 is good, light and reasonable in price (US$400). It is very sharp wide-open out to the edges at 50, sharp in the centre wide-open at 18 with mild vignetting. The only real argument against it is that is a DC lens so will not work on a 1.3 multiplier lens, let alone FF. I am very happy with it as a replacement for the kit lens.
