zhi_da_zhong
I sometimes shoot with very dim available light in which AF becomes difficult to impossible. So, I wonder if I can turn on the SC-29's AF light without attaching an SB-800 flash to it. Does anyone know? Thanks!
beno_t_marchal
I doubt it because the illuminator is powered by the flash. I'm at the office now but could test if needed.
--ben

beno_t_marchal
Indeed, back home I tested it too. The AF illuminator is powered by the flash so the flash unit must be connected and on.
Note that you can configure the SB800 not to fire but still turn on the AF illuminator so you'd get the AF help but won't mess up the exposure.
--ben
gaius1
It won't, which is annoying as Canon's ST-E2 wireless controller will.
