denny_kyser
I am wondering if I should replace my heavy duty Photogenic light stand for one with casters for better stability and maneuverability. Wondering what everyone else uses.

ellis_vener_photography
Unless you are using a really large stand with a wide base. casters and stability is a difficult combination. For heavy lights and large softboxes , I tend to use a Bogen Avenger C-Stand and will sand bag it for stability.
John G.
My fav set up is having the softbox on a retractable or short boom with casters. I'm not sure of the make of my retractable boom, perhaps Matthews. It's a bit of an oldie. I like retractable or short booms because they allow me to point the box downwards even if it's mostly from the side. Otherwise, the box conflicts with the stand. I like casters because it allows me to me to move the softbox to a precise placement from the front, where I can see what's going on. When I'm shooting, I often work sitting on a high stool, and I can reach over with my foot, hook it around the leg of the caster stand, and grab the box by the edge and drag it around to where I want it. Soft box placement is a little more critical than most people would think and adjustablility is essential to any good set. Good luck!
