Steven Rowley
I'm curious as to how business licensing requirements vary from state to state for photography. In my city and state, there is no license or permit required for a photography business. City and state government offices have told me that "photography" is not a regulated profession. The state does require that you register the name of the busniess. I'm checked with the state, city, and small business developement association, which most cities have. What about your state or city?
eric friedemann
Nope, in Illinois, there is no professional licensure requirement for photography businesses. However, if the state imposed such a license, it would be to collect more taxes- not for reasons of ensuring the competence of professional photographers. taylorholder
Would you not need a small business license in any state for any business? Taylor

Steven Rowley
When I asked the city, state, and SBDA I mentioned licenses, permits, etc and I was told there is nothing required for a photography business. The only thing I was told that had any control over photography in my state were the "child pornography" laws. No I was quite surprised too. gcoates
I live in California. I live inside the Chico city limits, so I have to get a business license. (However, this is not specific to photography.) I also use a business name, so I had to file a Fictitious Name Statement with the county.
Jerry_
The NW part of Florida requires one to have a occupational license, and a sales tax number for collecting and paying the collected sales tax to the state. Some counties have a 'fee' for insuring your place of business is not a hazard to the neighborhood. No real 'requirement' exists to know anything about photography.
