(OT) My take on the Lensbaby

After seeing some nice photos from Steve Deer, I remembered that I had

a Lensbaby for my Contax RTS II (that I can't bear to sell). So I

brought it out for a whirl with a roll of XP2.

Basically, I quite enjoyed it, but I feel that for many of my shots, I

was 'forcing' on the tilt function instead of letting the composition

'decide' if it was required. Also, in many cases, I can do the

isolation pretty well with a very fast lens as well, for example my

Canon 50mm f/1.2, and doesn't require the tilt lens. I was also using

a f/7.5 washer, so the depth of field is actually quite deep; probably

a f/5.1 washer would look better.

They've got a Lensbaby for Leica Rs now, and I might get it as well,

since it's a light and handy little tool that can add to your photos

if used judiciously.

A Lensbaby is a simple toy camera lens assembled into a mount for use on an SLR. The

focal length is about 60-70mm, there are simple aperture rings to enable it to be use wide

open to stop down, and the mount has a flex-accordian pipe so you focus it by squeezing

it around with your fingers until you get the effect you want in the viewfinder.

They're kind of fun to play with if a little pricey ... $90. Read about them at

yeah...i use one of these quite often. i really like the dreamy/erie look i get from it. i completely removed my aperature washer and its pretty fast now.

anything to stray from the 'norm' of a perfectly composed/exposed picture. the kind that has been force fed and crammed down our throats by every 'critic'(aka textbook shooters with little or no imagination) out there...<div>00B6XJ-21814484.jpg.158f4b6aa585f312d09251fbf5c87dd2.jpg</div>

Yeah Raid, it takes a bit of practice to get slightly sharp results from the lensbaby. I can't do it too quickly, that's why the street photo I posted actually didn't really get the focus quite right on the lady. Here's one isn't that blurry:

Not the most exciting composition, but it's the sharpest I've been able to get with this lens. Still, I'm not sure people use it for the sharpness I'd imagine.
