__jon__
I've only heard one rumor, which turned out to be a backordered situation. But with PMA in the next weeks, it could be about right. I'd like to know because I'm ready to buy one. I think I'll wait a few weeks and see...
hugebob
Please let us know what you find out. I'm looking at the this model as well as the Nikon Coolscan V ED.
jtk
Has anybody compared the Minolta nose-to-nose with the Nikon V? Some say Minolta's far slower but can be sharper than the Nikon if you manually focus...valid?
robert goldstein
From images that I have seen posted on the web, it is my impression that the 5400 produces slightly sharper images with better shadow detail than the Nikon LS 5000, which is one step above the Nikon V. The 5400 is definitely slower, especially with negatives. I'm keeping mine. However, if I had large numbers of images to scan, I would probably go with the Nikon. wilfred_van_der_vegte1
Please note - the main reason why the Minolta is so much slower is that it produces almost twice as many pixels as the Nikons. Resolution in pixels per square inch: Minolta: 5400x5400 = 29,160,00 px/sq.in Nikon: 4000x4000 = 16,000,000 px/sq.in
jtk
Since few scans would be better at 5400 than, say, 3200, would the Minolta and the Nikon V be equally fast at that resolution? Online reports comparing V with 5400 are at odds about shadow detail ...some give the nod to Minolta, some to Nikon... how about some additional input about that? Some say one or the other chokes on dense film. What's your experience with dense negatives or, say, underexposed Velvia?
