photoreu
Just wondering if someone could tell me how many aperture blades the 28-135 IS lens has? I'm looking to get this lens next and I'm hoping for an improvement over my 50 f/1.8's little pentagons in the background. I took some christmas portraits and the OOF tree in the background was covered with them. :)

jack_rabin
Me thinks it's not the absolute number of aperture blades, but rather whether the lens is designed with circular aperture or not. The little hexagons is not the reason I got rid of my copy of Canon 28-135 IS, the slow f/stop was. Canon's 24-70L 2.8 has a circular aperture, as does the 70-200L f/2.8 IS (not the other 70-200s). Strangely enough, I believe the non-L mid-priced 55-200mm has a circular aperture, which may be a better choice if you want to shoot "low priced bokah." I also believe the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 di lens has a circular aperture, and opens wide enough to get the effect. You can check the manufacturers web sites. Circular apertures are not a killer deal making feature, but I anecdotally believe they give me nicer pictures, with a "creamier textured" 3-D fall off between focus and OOF areas. Can't think of different vocabulary to describe what I see.
photoreu
Thanks for the responses. Jack I know exactly what you mean. I'm actually planning on getting the 24-70 when the budget allows.. but for now, I'm going to make do with the 28-135 for my mid range zoom. I'm going to be making a rather large investment in lenses soon but right now I just need something quick (cant afford those L zooms just yet).. anyway.. thanks for the input!
