phil vaughan - yorkshire u
I remember reading here, probably more than once, that there's a smaller lens hood that will fit the 17-40 providing better shading but without vignetting on a 1.6 crop DSLR. I've done a search and came up with nothing. PLease help, I know that there's someone out there that knows.
fxdonny
It's the hood for Canon 24/1.4 L lens, EW-83D or EW-83DII.

rintintin
If you use the lens often, the replacement hood is worth the annoying amount of money Canon charges for one of their hoods. I don't know about the better shading, but:

the lens with the hood reversed fits in bags & pouches much easier
the deeper cutouts allow easier access to polarizers, lens hoods, etc.

Read all about it here.
hkbmac
I got mine on eBay for about 1/2 of Canon's price.

robin_sibson1
I have been using the 17~40 on my 20D with the EW-83DII hood. Works fine, much neater and almost certainly more effective than the standard EW-83E (which you can recycle to the 10~22 when you get one ...!). As pointed out, the only problem is that the EW-83DII is one of the sillier-priced Canon hoods.
ho_ho
I've tried on my ancient RT and found no dark corners! Anyone who got a 1Ds(MkII) should have a trial and let us know the result.
