majid
The best desktop equipment would be an Imacon Flextight, but if you can't swing the $5000 minimum price, you will either use a flatbed or stitch half-scans from a Nikon 8000ED. I've seen the Epson 4990 demonstrated at MacWorld SF with one of Doug's MF film holders. It's a serviceable solution, visibly sharper than the 3170 I am using today, and I will probably upgrade when it is released in March.
hakon_soreide
Once onto the subject of the Epson 4990, are there any decent online reviews of this kit yet, especially in how it compares to the earlier offerings from Epson and the Canon competition?
www.hakonsoreide.com
bob_prichard
I recently purchased an Imacon Photo scanner on ebay for $2600. The great thing about an Imacon is that there are no problems with flatness as it curves the film like a drum scanner. A 6x18 holder is available. ulf_agerup
I use the Epson 4990 for 6x6 scanning and I am happily surprised by the output. I even use it for 35mm with good results. Sharpness is good, as is speed. I do have some trouble getting the tones right in high contrast photos, but I think it is more due to my inexperience as scanner operator than anything else.
