sliu
I am not a big fan of wide angle (WA) lens. <p> I used to have 50mm on my Nikon exlusively. Then I bought a 24 f/2.8 for my Yellowstore trip last year. The saleman in Adorama said it is about personal taste, either you like it or you don't like it. And to be honest, I hated it but still bought it because I want to take some landscape pictures. They were not as good as what I expected. <p> Recently I started to use 24mm for Macy's Thanksgiving Parade and some subway shots. They are not bad. <p> <img src="http://www.photo.net/bboard/image?bboard_upload_id=20627884"> <img src="http://www.photo.net/bboard/image?bboard_upload_id=20799884"> <p> After shooting lots of pictures with 24 and 35mm, something <b>strange</b> happened to me: Yesterday I tried 50mm again. I found it <b>incredibly difficult</b> to shoot. It is tasteless. I can't shoot 50mm anymore. My eye was ruined by WA lens! <p>WA lens is like spicy food. It is hard to taste at very beginning, but if you are used to it, everything else becomes tasteless. <p> I want my taste back! <p> <img src="http://www.photo.net/bboard/image?bboard_upload_id=18811384"> <img src="http://www.photo.net/bboard/image?bboard_upload_id=20361484"> <p> I hate WA not because it makes shooting easy but makes shooting normal hard! dennyp
try your 24mm at night on the street. You will get stuff the the photo that you can't see with the normal eye. have a nice dayDenny
jwenting
Personally I've always hated 50mm. Maybe 24 is too wide for you and you now discovered that 50 is really too narrow (it is IMO) as a "normal" lens. Get a 35mm f/2 Nikkor and walk around with that. michaelging
S.....don't you hate it when photographers holding cameras are in your pictures :).I like your shots, you know what they say, once you go wide, you'll never have to hide. It does make you get in a little closer and makes you watch your forgrounds.I am know as the WA photographer at work. I think of a 28 as my medium telly. I once had a photo Editor hide the Pool 16mm lens, so I could not use it.
leslie_cheung
>>>>>I hate WA not because it makes shooting easy but makes shooting normal hard! <<<<< Personally, I think it's the opposite. You'll have to watch out for many things in the back / foreground you don't want with wideangles. With a 50mm or tele, you point at what interest you and ignore what's outside the frame. My good friend use the 50mm and 85mm all the time and I lend him my 24mm then he got dizzy just by looking through the viewfinder.
Uhooru
I think what Leslie said is a key. I have that 24 2.8 and love it. I also use 35 alot on and 50. The 50's great when lets say there's a lot of contrasty light that will blow out, you can isolate things a bit. I like 35 for good general use and sometimes I'll use the Nikon w/ the 24 and I like the quality of it and the pictures you get. Sometimes I'll try the vc 21, but I've not used that enough to get used to it. Hmmmm maybe I'll take it out now:)But basically its your taste, but also what the shooting situation calls for, at least that's how I've been doing it. Eddie1664878514
I have similar experience in the past, but you just have to use 50 more to get back your "taste". I like 24 and 75, and I carry two bodies all the time if possible. I find using a lense wider than 24 really difficult.
nikonichiban
I just bought a DSLR. I miss my 24/2.8 AI horribly. Alas, a 14/2.8 is just too darn expensive. Mark me down as a WA person.
sliu
These pictures are all shot with 50mm f/2. <p> <a href="http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00AVBg"> http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00AVBg</a> <p> Did I get my 50mm taste back? over exposure
well, I don't know....i love WA, and the 24 is one of my favourite lenses...to me a 50 is just a telephoto, I use it like people use a 200, usually....:-) I like the convenience of doing long times exposure at night just with the help of my hands....and I love the prospective! bye
arkady n.
S., I feel the same way. A while ago I tried a 19mm lens and now I am not even sure how to use 50mm any more ; (<br><br><center><img src="http://www.nemerovsky.com/arkady/photos/lenjul_wedding/pavlik/08_26_2004_V_fr30.jpg"><br><i>19mm</i></center>
rob_murray
I have the best of both worlds with my Canon 22-55 USM lens. I really like to use long lenses like 300 F4 to Isolate things and blow out the background but the wide angles are really great. Nearly 3D effect in some shots with so much depth of field. dean_g
Really Nice picture Arkady. Since I got a .8X wa converter to make the Ricoh gx 28mm into a 22mm, even the 28mm setting seems a little bland. OTOH I'm quite content with using a 35mm and 50mm with the Bessa R. I think the quality of the viewfinder may be a factor there.
andrew n.bra hrefhttp
It's all a question of personal taste of course. Most of my <<a href="http://unposed.4020.net">unposed.4020.net</a>> project was taken with various 50mm lenses in portrait format. I decided to do this as it's the way I see and also there is relatively little "Street Photography" done this way.<p> Sometimes I'll also use a horizontal 35mm, but if I really want to go wider then I go all the way and break out the 16mm full frame fisheye to shoot 360x180 degree spherical panoramas: <<a href="http://vr.4020.net">vr.4020.net</a>><p> Can't get wider than that :?)
