mcgarity
Does anyone know how a lens can develope haze on internal glass surfaces over time? I would suspect it has something to do with internal lubricants but I am not certain of that. Is there some environmental condition that makes a lens more prone to this? Is there anything you can do to prevent it? TIA. Larry
stephen_w.
I have cleaned the haze/fog out of my old Leitz lens. Since the fogged were the two elements directly adjacent to the aperture, I would presume the lubicant(s) used for the aperture out gassing was to blame. mskovacs
Most early optics were lubricated with marine animal-based lubricants. Many will argue about the exact process but I think the most likely is that oil migrates to the optics where it then oxidizes to form the haze.
