douglas_tourtelot
My SB-24's main capacitor seems to "fry" when recarging after a full-power dischage instead of it's usual "whine". I am thinking that the capactor may be on it's way out. A little slow to charge, and it doesn't make this "frying" noise when set to a lower discharge than 1/1. Anybody have any experience with a similar problem. Thanks.
User_1172872
Does it make the sound with new or fully charged batteries? My experience with two Nikon flashes (SB-24 and SB-26) is that they start to make that funny sound when the batteries are low.
scott_blair1
I bought my well-worn sb24 second-hand about three years ago. It made that sound then, and I kinda wondered about it. I've now moved on from film Nikons to Olympus digitals, and am still using the sb24 regularly. I had forgotten about the sound till you mentioned it. douglas_tourtelot
It makes that sound with fresh cells and take about 13-15 seconds to recycle after a full discharge. Does this seem like a normal situation? Thanks.
david_h._hartman
Try cleaning the contacts inside the flash. If your SB-24 still makes this sound it may be nearing the end.
vivek iyer
If any of you folks are planning to ditch your aging SB-24s, let me know. I am especially looking for the ones that have longer recycling times. I am serious. Vivek.
douglas_tourtelot
Hi David- Why "the end?" It is a piece of electronics, with, perhaps, a bad component. I would guess that the component is even fairly inexpensive; an electrolytic capacitor. Flash tube seems fine. Should be a reasonably cheap repair unless I am missing the obvious. Even seems like one I can DIY.
