stuart d
I read that the G1 is recommended for use with the new EX range of Speedlight flashguns. I understand the key difference between the EX range and the EZ range is E-TTL. Does anyone know whether the G1 can operate in A-TTL mode, and therefore use an EZ flash? Similarly, can the off-camera shoe cord 2 be used with the G1, in conjunction with a Canon flash?
My father just bought a G1 and I'm about to trade/sell my EOS equipment for Leica. Before I dispose of the 540EZ, I'd like to know if it will work on his digital camera. We live 6000 miles apart, so I can't test it on his G1 right now. Similarly, the G1 is on intergalactic backorder with my local dealer, so no joy there.
Thanks in advance,Stuart
pixseal
If the G1 has the same restrictions as the D30, it is incapable of off-the-film TTL metering (and by extension, incapable of A-TTL). Off-the-film TTL and A-TTL meter light reflected off the film - and there is no film in a digital camera. You probably need an EX flash - or use the 540EZ in manual mode. stuart d
Thanks Dave - that makes perfect sense now. I don't think the TTL/A- TTL off-the-film technicalities had sunk in. Looks like my father will be buying himself an EX.
jim_strutz
The G1 definitely cannot use an EZ series Speedlite. It must have an E-TTL capable flash for through the lens metering. It will use an "auto" flash though. Something like the Vivitar 283, Sunpak 383 work fine with it. But if you use one of those make sure it's trigger voltage is less than 6V. Same as Canon EOS cameras.
