waterden
I am considering buying a Rolleiflex 2.8 GX2 and would like to establish whether the shutter is a Seiko or Copal. Unfortunately, the camera is not to hand and the seller does not know which it is and I do not know how to advise him on identification. Can anyone help? donald_brewster
Unfortunately the answer is "it depends." GX Model 1 cameras used Synchro-Compur shutters. However, the GX Model 2 cameras used Copal, Seiko, and Synchro-Compur shutters. It seems that the Seiko shutters were used more on special editions. waterden
Is there any way of identifying the shutter by examining the camera?
donald_brewster
It should be identifiable on the plate around the taking lens.
donald_brewster
You are most likely going to get a Synchro-Compur Shutter, particularly if made after 2000, unless it is a special edition. GX2 Expression would have a Copal.
grepmat
Unlike in the old days, no, at least some of the GX's do not have any indication of what sort of shutter is inside. The manual, though, would tell you (provided it's accurate). At least this GX(2) Expression manual I have before me indicates a Seiko shutter. Cheers. waterden
The reason for my query is that I have read that the Seiko shutter is considerably stiffer than the Synchro-Compur or Copal versions. Does anyone have any experience of this? I want to use the camera hand held at relatively slow speeds and am concerned that with the Seiko shutter this may not be so easy. fwstutterheim
Your best choice would be a GX1. They all have the Synchro-Compur, exept for the "Japan Edition" of September 1995 which have the Seiko. Of the GX2 the "Expression" series (1995/6) have the Copal or some of them left over Synchro-Compurs. This series is marked "Expression" on the back. The 1996 "Club Rollei, Jersey" has the Seiko. The "Royal" has the Seiko. All this according to Mr. Prochnow's book.
fwstutterheim
Then there is the GX2 "75 Years" series (1995). Most of them have the Sychro-Compur. The aperture number sequence runs upwards to the right. Some have the Seiko. The aperture number sequence runs upwards to the left.
