Canvas Backpack for camera

I often use a small Swiss army surplus backpack with closed-cell foam padding (from a camping matress). The major problems with it are that it is cheap, not intended for photo use, and not labelled "EXPENSIVE PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT" and so does not meet Photonet standards. As just mentioned, I also sometimes use a beat-up army surplus shoulder bag (e.g. on a trip thru Russia a few years ago) - the main difference between it and a Domke is that I only paid $5 for it. You will no doubt be warned against trusting expensive and fragile photo equipment to such a makeshift solution; this is probably true. I use 20-40 year old Nikon and Rollei stuff which doesn't need brand-name protection :-)

I use an old black cordura cloth fanny pack that I either carry slung on my shoulder, carry using black nylon straps that I tied onto the "D" rings on either side of the top, or, oddly enough, strapped around my waist when I need both hands.

The camera (Pentax KX with 135mm lens), spare lens (in a padded case), and Gossen Luna Pro fit fine and get no more physical abuse than If I were carrying them with a brand name case. The whole thing fits into a a six-pack cooler I keep in my car in case I want to leave the kit behind for awhile. I once fabricated a closed cell interior padding setup for it, and son-of-a-gun, it started looking like a camera bag.

My point, I guess, is that anything can work as long as you are not in the habit of dropping your gear down a flight of concrete steps.
