carbonado
Can anyone give me some pointers about Maxwell screens in Rolleiflex? I just purchased a used Rolleilflex 3.5MX Tessar, and I'm really digging how it works and how the pictures look. I've heard about Maxwell screens -- and Beattie screens -- and understand that they run around $140 or so. Who do I contact? Is there a webpage for (Bill?) Maxwell? Are the screens user installable? What about Beattie screens? Better? Worse? Cheaper? User-installable?
godfrey
I tried a Beattie screen once and found it to be bright but hard to focus, and the scribe lines I like were very coarse and obnoxious.

Bill Maxwell's focusing screens are very bright and even in illumination, and provide superb focusing 'tooth'. While you can probably install one yourself, I took the opportunity to have my '51 3.5MX CLA'ed and the focusing system calibrated when I had it done. Well worth the money I spent!

Bill is available by phone or letter:

Bill Maxwell
Maxwell Precision Optics
P.O. andrew_schank
I second everything that was said above--my exact experience with Beatie and the Maxwell screens on a Rollei TLR. I installed the screens myself, and the 3.5 F was a simple drop in because that camera had a removeable hood. The one in an old Rolleicord was a bit more tricky because it originally had a thicker real ground glass on it, so I had to shim the hood up as per Maxwell's instructions or the focus calibration between focusing and the taking lens would be thrown off. mike_watkins
I bought a used Mamiya RB67 screen from B&H Photo and cut it down to fit the rolleiflex (MX). There is a site that tells you how to do it here http://home.t-online.de/home/pjwum/rolleiflex_screen.htm Its ten times brighter than the old screen and cost me about $30. Mike.
