greg_tomas
Please refer to the pictures on this site: http://www.heidiniemala.com/hn_pages/HN1Fashion/hn1_01.html I read in an article that she bleaches kodak Portra 160NC film to get this effect. Just wondering if anyone has done this? and how? I imagine it could be done by dipping the negs in farmer's reducer...don't know for how long though. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Greg
john_shriver
<p>It wouldn't be the sort of bleaches used for B&W negatives, since they attack metallic silver. There is no metallic silver in color negatives.</p> <p>There are bleaches available for bleaching E-6 films for retouching. There are some that bleach all the dyes, and ones that bleach one dye selectively. It is possible that they also work for C-41 negatives. (I'm sure Kodak could inform you if you called and asked.) See Kodak <a href="http://www.kodak.com/global/en/professional/support/techPubs/e68/e68.jhtml">Publication E-68</a>.</p>
rowland_mowrey
John is right, but I don't think that is how her effect is achieved. The colors look too strong to have been bleached. However, whatever she uses it makes for effective prints. Ron Mowrey
jan_brittenson
It looks like reduced saturation, compensated by increased contrast. Bleach bypass? Is there such a thing for C-41?
rowland_mowrey
There are several ways to achieve effects like that. The one I like is catalytic image amplification. Bleach bypass can work but mainly adds an overall black image to the final print. It can be good or bad. Ron Mowrey
greg_tomas
Searched for catalytic image amplification all over google, but can't find it. Can you describe this process to me.
