Sunpak PZ 5000 AF and the Canon EOS 20D

Hi,

 

I've a Canon EOS 20D and a Sunpak PZ 5000 AF flash. The 5000 and my

old Canon Digital Rebel were a nice combination. All I get with the

20D is Error 99.

 

Now the 20D seems to have more flash options so I could just be

screwing this up but I figured I'd ask first. should this combination

work (I know it doesn't do ETTL or ETTL2. I just want to use it in

automode.) or do I need to be buying a new flash?

Never mind. Answered over at DPreview. Apparently it doesn't work with the 20D. Only the 10D or 300D or TTL canon cameras. (Just put it in classifieds.)

FWIW, I don't think that spending 1500$ on a fine camera body and then getting cheap on a decent flash like the 420EX (170$) is a good photographic sense. YMMV.

I prefered the 5000 to the 420. I've had both. (Actually traded the 420 for the 5000.) I like the ability to use it as an autoflash and I absolutely love having the manual controls.

 

So I really want the 550 I guess. Course I rarely use flash so I don't really want to spend a lot on this.

 

Maybe I need to buy another 420.

It shows how to make the Sunpak useable in auto and manual mode with a 20D. You don't have to be quite as drastic as to remove the pin - you can use the trick illustrated here for the same effect:
