Print sizing workflow?

Recommended Posts

OK, I am thinking about the best way to cope with the differing paper

size proportions of (UK based) commonly used print paper - 6" x 4"

(152mm x 102mm), A4 (297 mm x 210mm) & A3 (420mm x 297mm).

Given that I am using a Canon 1D that produces raw images of 2496 x

1662 pixels, I have been using a PS7 crop tool to produce generic

sized files for processing of 2400 x 1600 pixels.

This is fine for simple 6 x 4 print sas the image size has a common

scaling factor for height and width. However both A4 and A3 have

slightly differing proportions so you cannot simply apply a scaling

interpolation factor without having image distortion in either height

or width, something has to give.

I can see three ways round this.

1 Make 3 copies of each image to be printed to correspond with the

individual paper proportions - laborious

2 Use a common image size and trim the paper to fit the

interpolation ratio after printing, but then need to consider a

matting mask

3 Make a "frame image" with a 2400 x 1600 pixel inside ratio guide

mark and canvas size to match A3 or A4 proportions then import and

paste the standard image size into the "frame image" and print. -

seems the most elegant solution

What in practice do people do when selling differing sized prints of

the same image?
