abintraphoto
Greetings ...I would appreciate your opinions as to the effects on the HB darkslide seal .... of leaving the darkslide inserted into the film back when not in use. I've recently acquired a 2nd film back and promptly loaded it with B&W film and now it sits there awaiting use with the dark slide inserted. My concern is - compressing the felt seal. Thanks,
jimh
Are you sure it has a felt seal? I bought Hasselblad seals for my Kiev backs and they were made of thin metal. Anyway, I'd just stock up with spare seals and change them now and then. The cost (at least here in Sweden) is just about $2 each and they are very simple to replace with a screwdriver and five minutes work.
thomas_breazeale1
Ken, Leaving your darkslide in your filmback will not harm your seal. There is more wear from repeated removal and insertion than leaving it in place.
q.g._de_bakker
Jim wrote: I bought Hasselblad seals for my Kiev backs and they were made of thin metal." Actually, the seals are a two part thing. One part (the actual seal) is a plastic foam pad, which will indeed suffer from being depressed all the time; and a shiny (aluminized?) plastic (not metal) sleeve, folded around the edge of the foam pad which protects the plastic foam against the sharp edge of the darkslide by guiding it over the foam. It would indeed be best to keep the darkslide out whenever possible, though it will not make a huge difference. The foam pad will deteriorate with age, even when the magazine is stored with the slide removed, and must be replaced now and again.
