b_christopher
I've used my 70-200 2.8L for about 7 years for indoor sports photos, mounted on a monopod via the collar. Recently, I've noticed some roughness when turning from horizontal to vertical. I see no visible wear on either surface, and all of the screws on the lens seem to be holding the spacers tightly. I was curious to know if anyone has experienced the same(missed some key shots inspecting the gear, that is) and what might help smooth out the transition when swithcing composition formats. theodore_coffey
If you have bare aluminum against bare aluminum then what has happened is: Aluminum oxide has developed between the surfaces which acts as an abrasive( such as aluminum oxide sandpaper). The solution is to remove the oxide and lubricate. Disassemble and clean mating surfaces with a fine abrasive pad. You will notice a black dust which is normal. Clean surfaces with a dry rag and immediately coat clean surfaces with an aluminum lubricant stick(like super slick) available from hardware stores. DONOT use conventional lubricants because they will collect and hold aluminum oxide particles and make an abrasive slurry which can make the condition worse. PuppyDigs
All my Tripod rings have a rayon lining. After extensive use it wears and results in bare metal on metal. Replace the lining and all will be well... Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
bobatkins
I replaced the worn fabric lining in the collar for my 300/4L with adhesive teflon sheet of a suitable thickness. Had no problems since.
PuppyDigs
Bob, where did you find adhesive teflon sheets? It sounds like a much better idea than the original felt or rayon. david_moreland
Try McMaster Carr. Another material option would UHMW-PE. David
