Lubricate tripod collar?

I've used my 70-200 2.8L for about 7 years for indoor sports photos,

mounted on a monopod via the collar. Recently, I've noticed some

roughness when turning from horizontal to vertical. I see no visible

wear on either surface, and all of the screws on the lens seem to be

holding the spacers tightly. I was curious to know if anyone has

experienced the same(missed some key shots inspecting the gear, that

is) and what might help smooth out the transition when swithcing

composition formats.

If you have bare aluminum against bare aluminum then what has happened is: Aluminum oxide has developed between the surfaces which acts as an abrasive( such as aluminum oxide sandpaper). The solution is to remove the oxide and lubricate. Disassemble and clean mating surfaces with a fine abrasive pad. You will notice a black dust which is normal. Clean surfaces with a dry rag and immediately coat clean surfaces with an aluminum lubricant stick(like super slick) available from hardware stores. DONOT use conventional lubricants because they will collect and hold aluminum oxide particles and make an abrasive slurry which can make the condition worse.
