msoskil
I will be at a wedding in Phoenix and making the 2 hour drive to Sedona on that Saturday night in order to get some sunrise photography in. I must be back in Phoenix for a red-eye leaving on Sunday night. I have read that Schnebly Hill Road is the best location for morning photography, but I am on a very tight budget and am not sure if my economy rental car will be able to make that trek. Any suggestions as to where I might be able to set up for sunrise? Unfortunately I don't think I'll have much time Saturday night to scout out locations. Also, any suggestions for star-trails locations? Thanks! Mike
david_henderson
Schnebly Hill Road isn't bad-pretty wide and gradients not too steep. I think you'd make it in a car provided its dry. I can't recall needing 4wd up there.
bob_finley
Schnebly hill is ok in two wheel drive but some spots can have fairly deep ruts. Approach from Sedona side and you can return easily if the rental bottoms out to often.
gary_anthes
Question: What's the difference between a rental car and a four-wheel drive vehicle? Answer: The rental car will go anywhere. I don't know who "coined" this joke, but I heard it from a professional nature photgrapher.
david_henderson
The above matches my experience too, but be aware that in the small print for most rental agreements is a clause to the effect that the hirer is liable for any damage incurred on unmetalled roads. This even applies with 4wd hires! Nevertheless, as I've said, I don't think you should have much difficulty on Schnebly Hill Road unless it's wet. christian deichert
With the current drought conditions (I know, drought in a desert seems redundant, but we get 'em too), I wouldn't think that wet would be a problem right now. Monsoon season (yes, we have one) doesn't start until later in the summer.
msoskil
Thanks for all of the help. I went and tried Schnebly Hill Road. I didn't get to the vista, though. I made it in about 2 miles, and then got a flat. Luckily I had a can of fix-a-flat w/ me, and all was ok. The ford escort I rented couldn;t take it. I did get some nice afternoon shots, though. shad_sluiter1
Do you care to leave the VIN of the Escort so I don't buy it off the lot? This story reminds me of a small rental that I took from Moab to the Canyonlands visitor's center on the White Rim route. I thought I was way out of line until I met an 18-wheel semi truck that was coming back to town from the Geronimo movie set.
the lone ranger
i have a question. when are the water conditions at their fullest in the parks surrounding Sedona? my dream picture would be to take a sunset picture of the cathedral rocks with Michelle Branch as the foreground. mm mmm. :-) join her street team thru my link. http://i-squad.net/cgi-bin/maverick.cgi?sf=1&w=yes&u=GodofSax&a=Michelle+Branch
