RB67 PRO SD for beginner in MF with WIDE need

Dear Everyone,

I want to begin in Medium Format. I have more than 20 years with 35mm

SLR. Some college courses with 6x6. I'm in search of the ideal MF

camera. I think the RB series is for me : Mechanical, manual,...

My primaries subjects will be landscape and Portrait, and sometime

Fine-Art. With Landscape, I love wide lens. The primary reason why I

go for the RB is is the 7 in 6x7 and the PRO-SD is the 37mm I don't

see anywhere a wider lens (fish or not) than the 50mm for the RB (not

SD).

I have a lot of questions (and yes I read a lot of post about SD and

non-SD) :

Did the older lens work on the SD (with adaptor)? I read it once,

never find the information again !

On this operation, did I lost some function ?

Did the 37mm exist for non-SD body ?

Did third party lens exist for RB ?

Can I use exo-mount on RB (Kiev, Hass, Zeiss, etc...) ?

Did 120/220 back exist for non-SD ?

Thank You,

Denis Bergeron

The wider mouth on the SD is for the 75mm Shift and 500mm lenses. They

had to go to a bigger mouth for them. Otherwise, you need the lens adapter

ring to mount the rest of the lenses. On the older bodies you remove the ring if

supplied with the lens. You can use the KL lenses on the older bodies by

removing the ring. If interested I have a beautiful condtion Pro-S at a good

price. Let me know. Btw, the 37mm is a fisheye. You really want that? You'd

probably be more interested in the 50mm which approximates a 25mm for a

35mm SLR...

As far as I know, there are no third party lenses for the line.

The older bodies take 120, 220, 70mm, Powerdrive (6x8), Polaroid, Quadra

(72mm sq) and even double cut film holders. I have cut film holders for my

camera.

The RB would certainly be very good especially if you don't need to carry it around much. But for landscapes, I would also consider Pentax 67. It has very good and reasonably priced lenses also in the wide end, including 35 fisheye, 45 and 55 mm.

The Mamiya RB67 is one of the heaviest, if not the heaviest MF. (The heaviest being IMO the Fuji 680).
For landscapes, about weight of the camera and lenses, you'll never see the difference between a RB67 and a large format folding camera.
If you like wide lenses, don't forget Zeiss lenses on the Rollei and Hasselblad. You have a wonderful Distagon 30mm, and a distorsion-free Biogon 38mm on the SWC.
