babette_ross
Looks like ill be in Portland in mid December... After spending some quality time researching day trips to the coast and to the Columbia Gorge area for hiking it occurs to me that snow may be an issue. Anyone out there with any practical advice? Spearhead
It's likely that in December it will be extremely wet and soggy at the lower elevations and snowy at higher elevations. It's unlikely you will see any snow in the Gorge, but you will find hiking off any paved trail can be muddy and slippery. Also, camera gear should be weatherproof or well-protected against the elements. Music and Portraits Blog: Life in Portugal
tri_tran3
The Gorge would be nice for waterfalls shots. I would go in the early morning for the dew or a little ice on the leaves and branches. Silverfalls is also an awesome destiny to shoot waterfalls in the winter. Have fun. 40mm
Cold, grey, wet, windy. It can be very windy in the gorge. Snow's possible anytime, but unpredictable.
mark_jordan3
I've found Dec-Jan to be a great time of the year to visit Multnomah Falls...which ordinarily is a tourist trap. There is a hiking trail that takes you to the top of the falls and then proceeds on along a series of beautiful upper falls. As others have commented, it is a very wet time of year...so bring good hiking shoes and something waterproof (plastic bag) to cover your gear when not shooting.
