I'm far from being an expert but I think that you may be encountering a memory problem. If so possible solutions would include allocating more memory to the application (if that is possible), closing other applications which may be running, clearing tmp files (perhaps a reboot), installing more RAM or scanning at a lower resolution.

One other possibility is that you are not dragging and stretching (or shrinking) the dotted line rectangle which represents the area to be scanned. This usually defaults to the shape it had from your previous scan.

Ernie -- what's this white stuff falling out of the sky in Seattle?

I had the same problem with mine--just turn off the auto thumbnail thing and manually select the area to scan. The scanner is good but the software is inane. Should it really inform me to remove the reflective mat--EVERY time i want to scan some film!!!

Dan Sweet - you are doing something wrong. you should only get that message when you switch from flatbed to a mode using the external light source. I suspect you haven't set the mode to save and reuse the scan settings. you should be able to set your mode and never have that dialogue box appear.

perhaps we should explore this. my new scanner came with Twain v5.51A, and I have been unable to force this warning message except for explicitly selecting flatbed and then one of the other modes. in that context it makes sense, but traversing through the CONFIGURATION/OTHER menu and selecting 'save preview settings' always brings the scanner up into a known and selected state.
