RAW converter

I see everyone shooting RAW images. Can i can get a converter besides

buying the nikon one?? i didn't even load the software from the D70,

would that have anything? I load the jpeg's right from the CF slot on

my PC and then run PS.I thought someone mentioned an adobe converter

for RAW images. thanks

If your D70 did not come with Nikon View 6.x you can download it from nikonusa.com for free (if you have a USA D70/non-grey market). Apparently the more recent D70's have not been packaged with Nikon View. (Bought mine 3-4 weeks ago and it came with Trial N. Capture, and whatever Picture POS software was in there. However it did have the new firmware already.)

IrfanView will view .nef files and convert them to other formats such as tiff.

 

See also www.photo.net/learn/raw/ which discusses some of the issues involved in conversion from raw. In particular there is the question of antialiasing, which may be important.

 

Myself, I don't see that raw produces enough of an improvement over fine to make it worth the effort. But then my ultimate comparison is scanning 4 x 5, and anything one does with a D70 is going to pale by comparison.
