RAW converter

I see everyone shooting RAW images. Can i can get a converter besides

buying the nikon one?? i didn't even load the software from the D70,

would that have anything? I load the jpeg's right from the CF slot on

my PC and then run PS.I thought someone mentioned an adobe converter

for RAW images. thanks

Adobe Photoshop CS has a "raw" converter built-in, but because the D70 was released a

few months after Adobe launched PsCS they never created a D70 compliant update

converter for the Adobe Raw Converter for Photoshop 7.

 

You should also try the light version of Capture One from Phase One. (www.phaseone.com)

Nikon View has an editing device that is not as fancy as nikon Capture - but it converts raw to Jpeg or tiff and will even open them up in Photoshop for you if you set it up right. - Nikon View should have come with your camera.

If your D70 did not come with Nikon View 6.x you can download it from nikonusa.com for free (if you have a USA D70/non-grey market). Apparently the more recent D70's have not been packaged with Nikon View. (Bought mine 3-4 weeks ago and it came with Trial N. Capture, and whatever Picture POS software was in there. However it did have the new firmware already.)

Adobe has an update for Camera Raw, which makes it possible to open RAW files from the D70 with Photoshop CS.

C1DSLR (http://c1dslr.com) made by Phase One rocks and at $99 it's worth every penny.

dcraw.exe can convert RAW to .psd files. With pnmtools it can also convery them to .png, .jpg, .tif, and many more obscure ones as well.

IrfanView will view .nef files and convert them to other formats such as tiff.

 

See also www.photo.net/learn/raw/ which discusses some of the issues involved in conversion from raw. In particular there is the question of antialiasing, which may be important.

 

Myself, I don't see that raw produces enough of an improvement over fine to make it worth the effort. But then my ultimate comparison is scanning 4 x 5, and anything one does with a D70 is going to pale by comparison.

While a 4+mp camera can't compare frame-by-frame to MF digital can trump in terms of possibilities.... here is one for you that only a several foot view camera *might* be able to touch.
