Hi there. I came across this lens...Canon 28-80mm USM IV 1:3.5-5.6.

That is the exact description I was given, but I can't seem to find

any information on this lens. I have done searches on this forum and

Yahoo. Do you think the description is incorrect? I can tell from the

picture of this lens that it says, "Ultrasonic" on the lens itself.

Thanks so much for your time!

Suzanne

the IV / V in the lens name means it's the fourth / fifth verison of Canon's 28-80mm lens

The general view it that it's not that good a lens, It's a Kit lens supplied with many lower model film cameras.

Unless you were offered it at a very low price, there are better options

The 28~80/3.5~5.6USM II and onwards are all minor variants of the same design of built-down-to-a-price budget lens, also available without USM, and in any event it is micro-USM not ring-USM and does not offer full-time manual focusing. The original 28~80/3.5~4.5USM was a consumer-grade lens in the same series as the 28~105/3.5~4.5USM that replaced it after a rather short life, and it was a pefectly respectable lens - said to be quite decent optically, ring-USM with FTM, non-rotating front element, metal bayonet, etc. However, I know of no reason to prefer it to the 28~105/3.5~4.5USM.

Hi, Suzanne

I used to have this lens which comes with my first film camera Elan IIe. I sold it out recently and changed to a 28-105mm USM.

Franly I do not lite the 28-80mm. To me the most nasty part is that its front element will rotate when you focus, so it is very hard to put a polarizer filter on. As you know, the polarizer is very good when you take pictures outside.

Be prepaied that the 28-105mm is much heavier than the 28-80mm.

Regards
