brideday
I am curious as to what would be a wiser choice in regards to overall quality and responsiveness. I currently have the Canon 70-200 2.8 and would like to extend to something in the 300mm range. Question is, should I get a 1.4x teleconverter or should I go with the Canon 300 F4 lens. Thanks,
digitmstr
If you have the cash go for the lens :) But, if the 300 is something you'd use/need from time to time get the extender instead and use the left over cash for purchasing another lens ;)
fastfirstshooter
I have the 70- 200 2.8 and the 300 f/2.8. Love them. Wth the tele-converters and a tube, you can crank the 300 up to 840 mm . u can't do that wth the f/
lee_shively
Get the 1.4x and try it. It's cheaper than buying the lens and it may be all you ever need. I use the 1.4x a lot with the 70-200 and I'm happy with my results. I also use the 2x with it and it's not bad at all. The 300/4 will be better in the long run. If you decide to get the 300, the 1.4x will fit it too and you will have a nice 420/5.6 lens.
whayne_padden
If you are only shooting @ 280mm occassionally, then stay with the 1.4x TC. If you find that you are constantly using 280mm and yearning for more then get a 300 f/4L IS (and 1.4x TC). The 300 also makes a wonderful macro lens due to it's close focussing, with or without extension and/or dioptres (500D) attached.
brideday
Thanks all for your input, I've decided to get the 1.4x as the price is under $300 and would come in handy later if and when I upgrade to a 300 2.8 lens. KB
