Black and White Prints from Color negative

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to have a lab print black and white photos with a

color negative image (basically scanning it digitally and converting

it to black and white). I dont care about printing on black and

white paper, I just like to frame some of my pictures and I think

some look better in black and white even though most of my pictures

are in color. I don't want to have to worry about shooting color and

black and white if I can just convert color to black and white

whenever I need to. If this can be done, where? I don't even care if

it's Walmart (as much as I dislike them). Thnx

It's very, VERY easy to do on a Frontier machine, and any lab that won't do it isn't worth going to. You can do it as you're running the film through the Frontier machine for the initial scan, but usually at the one-hour lab I work at we will export the file to another computer and desaturate there and also make some minor contrast adjustments. What you MIGHT want to do is have the Frontier lab scan the file for you for whatever print size you intend to make. That way you can go home and desaturate the print yourself in photoshop (there are a variety of ways to do it), and then you will have complete control over adjusting he contrast and other stuff also. Then just take it back and have them print it for you on the Frontier machine.

Best,

Joseph

I highly recommend Mpix.com for this. You can look at your scans from negatives on line and see how they will look in color, b&w and sepia and then order whatever you need. They are great for getting the same service from digital scans. In fact you can chose to have your prints on conventional or metallic paper, which is pretty cool.
