Gas (petrol) price signs

When I travel, I tend to take photos of gas prices, usually because

the prices are so much higher than they are here at home. Now they're

crazy here too! BTW ... it's possible to find gas for US$.20 less/

gallon here - this station is higher than most.<div>008CtW-17929084.jpg.2388e955aaf84360aa1a7acd955b10e6.jpg</div>

Lets see. US has 5% of world population, makes 25% it's CO2

emissions. In Europe a US gallon of gas costs in Excess of $5.00

(based on 3.63 L = 1US Gallon, £0.80/L, and £1=$1.8). Would all those

people be going to the office in a huge pickup or SUV if they were

paying the same prices as the rest of the world ?

Jon, don't mistake energy inefficiency for productivity. Homes and

offices I have visited in the US use so much energy you wouldn't be

allowed to build them in much of Europe. The popularity of very fuel

inefficient vehicles in the US - becuase of cheap fuel - is a major

contribution to America's position as enviromental villain. American

presidents have not signed up to treaties to reduce pollution,

because it would be unpopular at home, where the "Hey we're Americans

we can do what we darn well please - responsiblity is for other

people" attitude reigns. And then people act surprised when they find

much of the rest of the world doesn't like them.

I didn't mean to start this kind of debate. Just thought it would be

interesting to see gas price signs around the world. It wasn't meant

as any kind of springboard to pricing, efficiency or pollution

wars... So sorry.

My 2 cents - There are many places in the world that are still using

leaded gas - which was outlawed in the US back more than 20 years

ago. Leaded gas is much more polluting than unleaded. Plus, coal

fired electric plants actually put out a vast majority of US

pollution. Finally, not everyone in the US or even Texas has big gas

guzzling vehicles - my car gets 37 mpg on the highway, which I think

is pretty darn good.

So should I have TPTB delete or close this topic? Because's it's gone

totally OT

James: Don't mistake sarcastic humor for sincerity. Also, don't

taint your attempts at objectivity with

characterizations. "Enviromental villain," indeed. Per unit of fuel

consumed, the US is one of the least polluting nations in the world.

James: PS: The degree to which the US consumes energy and generates

pollution are way down the list of reasons why "the rest of the

world doesn't like us." Political statements to the contrary, we

don't much care. Hate us if you wish, but without the US, all of

Europe would probably be speaking German and trading in Reichmarks

right now.

Jon. The American military machine alone consumes more energy than

most countries. Get your head out of the sand.

What do you mean by polututing? The amount of garbage from

unnecessary consumerism? Gobble gobble gobblebuy buy buy. Do a

search on e garbage china. I dare ya.

<i>Per unit of fuel consumed, the US is one of the least polluting

nations in the world.</i>

What ? When you burn a gallon of gas it produces less co2 than when I

burn one ? When a ton of coal goes into a your local power station it

produces less Co2 than when it goes in my local one ? It would be an

interesting trick if you could do it.

<I> The degree to which the US consumes energy and generates

pollution are way down the list of reasons why "the rest of the world

doesn't like us."</I>. I never said it was top of the list. The "We

can do whatever we like " attitude is the one that gets up people's

noses. Whether that is Polution, GM crops, Middle East Policy etc<br>

I think now is a not a great time for Americans to boast about their

military prowess - in both conflicts in Iraq the Americans killed

more British troops than the Iraqis did. But before you come out

with "without us you'd all be speaking German", check your history by

the time the Americans entered both World Wars, Germany was not

making any progress. Anyway fwiw I don't hate Americans, I'm English

I have more local nations to hate :-)

Back to James O'Neill:

"When you burn a gallon of gas it produces less co2 than when I burn

one?" Quite possibly. Newer vehicles burn gasoline more efficiently

than older vehicles. Since US residents (with their evil penchant

for consumption) probably drive newer vehicles, on average, than the

peoples in most other nations, we pollute less per gallon of gas

consumed. Likewise for all other fossil fuel consumption: our

emissions standards are quite strict.

"The 'We can do whatever we like' attitude is the one that gets up

people's noses." ... and it's probably the most popular

misrepresentation of the American spirit that exists.

"... in both conflicts in Iraq the Americans killed more British

troops than the Iraqis did." Even if this is true, what's your point?

"... check your history by the time the Americans entered both World

Wars, Germany was not making any progress." Hmmm, sounds like the

revisionist British historians have been busy.

More efficient combustion actually means you get more carbon Dioxide -

(C02) and less carbon monoxide (CO) and unburnt hydrocarbons. Modern

vehicles use less fuel per mile travelled, but Americas penchant for

using trucks and off road Vehicles on the "Hey we're Americans why

not" argument, drives up consumption. <p>

As for the history of the second world war. Check the date America

entered, and have a look at German progress in the few months before

that. <p>

'bout time one of us contributed a picture. <br>
