shotz
I like my Sunpak 544 - handle mount with swivel head. At least I did like it until earlier today when it passed away. (Sob) So, moving on, what's a good replacement with the same or more power, also handle mount, that uses the nifty 'through the lens' flash automation on my Nikon 8008? BTW, I like to buy everything on eBay because I am a cheapskate. I love the fact that this 544 lets me turn the head up or sideways or all the way around while keeping the sensor facing forward. I like the handle mount and it's power because I use it for a Crown Graphic and a Horseman 980 also.

jimstrutz
If you want to add 'through the lens' flash metering, get a Sunpak 555. You'll have to add the TTL Nikon module to it though. A downside of the 555 is that it's manual power output is only adjustable in whole stops versus the 522/544's 1/3 stops. One thing I like about Sunpak's 5xx series is that they all take 6 AA batteries for very fast full power recycles.
wyverndude
The upgrade path from your 544 is the Auto 622.
I have the ring head, the diffused head, the standard head (just 'cause it came with it) and the zoom head. I've actually only used the ring head and the diffused head!
You should have no problem getting the module to interface with your Nikon.
Unfortunately, Sunpak likes to keep their product features/specs a secret, so you won't find much of anything in the way of useful information on the web -if you have any specific questions, email me directly.
There's some basic information here
