mike f
Do both of these Speedlites work on the 1D II or just one of them? If one is not optimum what is it missing? Thanks
bill_goldman
Canon digital cameras do not work with TTL flash units as they read reflectance off the film plane. What? you don't have a film plane, you have a sensor? That means you can only use E-TTL Speedlites as they use your camera's evaluative metering to set flash exposures. Thus the 540EZ, a TTL unit WILL NOT work, but the 550EX, an E-TTL unit WILL WORK. However, both units will work when set to manual mode, but you won't get metered exposures.TT
yakim_peled1
In addition, the 550EX is the only flash which is fully compatible to the 45 AF points. In short, this is your only choice. Happy shooting ,Yakim.
heatherforcier
I have been using the 550EX with the EOS 1D Mark II with consistent flash results thus far. I cannot speak for the 540EX, but here is a link to Canon's website that discusses the new E-TTL II employed by the Mark II with flash use. E-TTL II

I do notice an improvement from flash use with the original 1D.
