Photography as a Narrative

Hello peoples.

I'm doing Photography T at Marist College Canberra (Australia) and I

have been given as assignment which requires me to find an example

of "Photography as a Narrative" any ideas what exactly I should be

looking for?

I think I'm supposed to be looking for stories told using photos

accompanied by captions/comments.

If anyone knows of, or happens to have a good example of this, and

would like to help out a student, then let me know plz :)

Just a couple of thoughts: You may be inspired by the many series by Duane Michaels. They sometimes bore comments or captions of sorts.

The Santa Fe Center for Photography has some interesting series of pictures on their website but not usually captioned. Go to http://www.photoprojects.org/ and look, for example, at 'Project Competition'.

I find it hard to think of most photography as not narrative. Any good essay or book will have a narrative to it, as humans have a strong desite to tell stories in narrative form. The question is, what is the narrative, or the message the author is telling? Given the work, this is open to a lot of debate, which is, in part, the idea behind picking up a camera and saying/showing something.

Photogaphers express time instead of solely graphics/composition either by distilling a

story into a single narrative moment (e.g. Cindy Sherman), or by using sequencing

photographs (as Michaels and Ralph Gibson often have) to construct a narrative.

A current show at NYC's Museum of Modern Art specifically focuses on the use of narrative

in fashon photography:

Although fictious, look at David Levinthal's books "Hitler Moves East" or "Mein Kampf". Also, William Wegman did some childrens books as well like "Little Red Riding Hood". There are also many people creating digital journals to document their lives. Do a google search for "digital diary" or "digital journal".These are just a few that I pulled of the top of my head but there are many more. I will post them as I think of them. Good luck.
