SB-12 Flash: Junk or Jewel?

My "new" old F3 needs a compact flash for occasional use. There's a

like-new SB-12 available cheap. Is it worth the bother or should I be

looking for something less ancient with TTL metering capability? Any

and all suggestions appreciated, as ever.

The SB-12 is TTL! I think the SB-17 is better though because it also has some auto flash modes like the SB-15.

Thanks, Mike. I know the SB-12 is TTL capable 8^). I'm curious whether it will "do" for the rare occasions I need a flash for the F3, or whether I need a more modern speedlight that matches the F3's modest requirements.

Sorry the way it was written it sounded like you didn't realize that :)

 

I'm using the Vivitar 3500, 3700 and 4600 type flashes with the DM/N2 module and the Vivitar F3 flash adapter. They'll work TTL flash (full stops only 25-400 ASA) with the F3. The key is the dedicated module which lets you set the ASA similar to the F3 flash cords. Since they are ISO footed, they also work standard TTL with other Nikons like the FE2/FM3A when set to "FG" mode and auto/manual with my FM2N.

 

Unfortunately, I believe they are also 80's vintage and equally ancient! Pretty much your only other option is to splurge and spend $110 on the AS-17 and get a modern Nikon TTL flash. Probably worth it if you have other modern Nikon bodies like F5/dSLRs.

 

I had an SB-15 that I used in auto/manual with my F3 w/ Vivitar foot and what is nice is that the flash tube is actually centred over the prism. The SB-12/17 would do the same + give you TTL. Its a small flash and recycles quickly with 4AA batts. Its on the wimpy side for bounce flash but it can be done with fast enough film.

This was my assessment. I already had several ISO type

speedlights so I bought the AS-17.<br>

This is a limitation of the F3 except that the AS-17 (in a bass

ackwards way) allows 1/3 stops intervals. The AS-17 has a film

speed switch in full stops and the an "exposure compensation

control" that gives the user +/- 1/3 stop.
