Fall Color Late Oct-Early Nov

I have a free ticket on SW that I'd like to use to get to some nice

fall foilage but can't travel until Oct 25th - Nov 5th. I live in

Florida and I'd like to get the best value for my ticket so I'd been

thinking of Oregon as a possibility. However, after checking some of

the prior postings it seems that Oregon isn't known for fall color.

I'd apprecicate any information on Oregon and other suggestions for

places that will still have good color this late in the year.

Thanks!!

Cyndi, You might want to look at the Smokies. Everyone has said that it has the potential to be one of the best years for fall foilage because of the rainfall earlier this year. Peak is around the last two weeks in October. Of course, I haven't been yet this year but plan on going at the end of October. Southwest does fly into Nashville, Raleigh/Durham NC, and several other cities along the New England coast. Good luck :o)

Cyndi-

I'll second David's vote for Zion. If you haven't been in that part of

the world, you couldn't pick a better time to be there. Fall colors

develop at different rates as the elevations change, and you will

have lots of options within relatively short driving distances. You

can be in the vicinity of Bryce within a couple of hours, and there

is lots of country in between. Hard to beat fall colors with all the

sandstone forms and colors. The road up into the canyon at

Zion opens to private vehicles around Nov 1 as I recall, and most

motels move to winter rates around Nov 1. I paid just over $30

for a room in Hurricane that cost $85 the week before. Best of

all, while Zion fairly bristles with photographers during the "in"

period around mid-October, the place is almost deserted by the

first week or so of November, yet there is still plenty of color to

work with.

FWIW: Northern Minnesota is at peak now, and Minneapolis "latitude" is at about 60%. Not too impressive this year - somewhat dull depending on where the most rain fell. Many maples are already done.

Lets see, you could fly into Chicago area, catch a few fall fests in Wisconsin and some of the river and driftless areas will be decent.
