donald_kim_lewiston
Hello, I am not going to purchase Capture 4.1 at this time for my D70. Can I take NEF (RAW) and then convert it into a jpg or tiff using pictureproject or photoshop 7? Thanks, Donny
lkv
It should work with Photoshop CS. I guess you just need an update if you want to use Photoshop 7...
Lenny
AFimage.com
ilkka_nissila
You can convert it from nikon view -> nikon editor -> photoshop 7 tiff - I'm sure there are other ways too.
adrian_byng_clarke
If I'm not mistaken you need to download a plugin for photoshop 7 from nikon. Nikon's NEF format is a closed proprietary format. The technology to read and write NEFs can only be borrowed with a license from Nikon.
rjacksonphoto
Picture Project and PS 7 will work fine without purchasing Nikon Capture. I was unable to load Picture Project until I had uninstalled NikonView 6, so I haven't used NV6 with the D70. Picture Project works fine for my CP 5000 as well. mfeetham
There is a free plugin for PS7 which allows you to open NEF files. Unfortunately, since the introduction of PS CS, Adobe doesn't seem to have the PS7 plugin available for download any longer. This makes the plugin very difficult to find. In fact, if anyone has a copy I could really use it. Much preferable to upgrading to CS.
lct__
The free NEF plugin of Nikon View should work with Photoshop 7 as well as CS AFAIK. Best, LCT
chris_ladoulis
As LCT mentioned, the plugin is free. It is a library included in Nikon View version 6.2.2 only. Just download from Nikon's web site and enter your serial number at time of download.
joseph_wisniewski
Donny - you can convert NEF with picture project. Picture Project drives me up the wall, and I would suggest downloading NikonView 6.2.2 from the Nikon support site. When you install NikonView, it will hunt down yoru PhotoShop installation, and automatically install a basif NEF importer in PhotoShop, so you can use "file->open" in PhotoShop to open the NEF, just like you would any other file. Lenny - When you install NikonView, it locates your PhotoShop plugins directory, and automatically installs the NEF plugin, weather you have CS, PhotoShop 7, 6, or 5, Elements, Elements 2, or LE. Adrian - The NEF format was easy to decipher, and several people have written open source decoders. Dan Coffins DCRAW is the most popular. Mike - The Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plugin for PhotoShop 7 was never free, it was a $100 download. Camera Raw 2 comes free with PhotoShop CS. The Nikon NEF pluging that comes with NikonView 6, while not as versatile as ACR, is free, and can install in just about any version of PhotoShop, right back to PhotoShop 5. LCT and Chris got it right.
mvw photo
Donny: worry no more. There is a free third party app yuou should be able to get working - see http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw for this and fo a whole host of tech information on all the RAW formats. I run dcraw on my Linux box and it works a dream. Michael
darren_spurgeon
IrfanView is a great image viewer and simple editor. It has loads of plugins, one of which reads NEF files. It's a quick and easy--and FREE--image viewer for those that may not have Photoshop. http://www.irfanview.com/ Be sure to also download the Plugins package to get the NEF interpreter. alan kolnik
After a lot of searching the various boards and Adobe and Nikon websiteswithout finding plug-ins for the NEF format available with the D70, I foundthat there are actually plug-ins provided with PictureProject, which is asort of simpleminded transfer and edit application provided with the D70.These allow PSE to open NEF files. (I have PSE 1, but I assume PSE 2 is thesame or better) In the interests of helping others that have been looking for theseplug-ins, I thought I'd post the names and locations of the files. They arein your C:\Program Files\Nikon\PictureProject folder (assuming a standard install),and are named: Nikon NEF Plugin LE.8biandNikon YCC TIFF.8BI. I don't know if you need both, or which is the correct or better one - Isimply copied them both into my Elements folder at C:\ProgramFiles\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\Plug-Ins\Automate, and, to be on the safeside, to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\Plug-Ins. PSE then opens the files, though, as I think others have noted, the EXIFinfo is not available. (a pity that such a great camera comes with such poor software, BTW - orthat you have to pay for the presumably more powerful Nikon Capture 4.1which comes as a trial version) Alan
lloyd_zimmerman
Yes you can. Most photo programs have free updates that will handle NEF. For example, adobe photo elements has free updates to handle NEF and other RAW programs that different manufactures use. It is a painless update, you won't feel a thing. It does everything.
